Straight lines, circles and conic sections in two dimensions; lines and planes in three dimensions.

(x−h)2+(y−k)2=r2,x2a2+y2b2=1,D=∣ax1+by1+cz1+d∣a2+b2+c2(x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2, \quad \frac{x^2}{a^2} + \frac{y^2}{b^2} = 1, \quad D = \frac{|ax_1 + by_1 + cz_1 + d|}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2 + c^2}}

What this unit covers

  • Straight lines: forms of the equation, angle between lines, distance of a point from a line, concurrency

  • Circles: equation, tangent, normal and chord; intersection with a line or another circle

  • Parabola, ellipse and hyperbola in standard form: foci, directrices, eccentricity, tangents and normals; locus problems

  • Three dimensions: direction cosines and ratios, lines, skew lines and shortest distance, planes, angles and coplanarity
